Agents of Shield S01E01 "Pilot" Review

"Welcome to Level 7"

The Hype

Agents of Shield may be one of the most anticipated shows in recent memory, instead of waiting months, and sometimes years for the next installment of the Marvel Cinematic Universe we would now get a weekly dose of the MCU courtesy of ABC Studios. It was a little surprising to hear there would be an entire series based on marvels secret organization, Especially since the mere existence of its main character, Phil Coulson almost completely negates a pivotal moment in of Marvels biggest film to date, but with TV budgets and a delicate continuity to maintain this choice does make of of sense

The Review

The Pilot episode is directed by Joss Whedon himself and boy does it have Whedon written all over it, and although not every attempt hits its mark the signature "Marvel Humor" is almost always present. Whedon does a great job of capturing the charm and wit of the cameos and one shots from which audiences first embraced the Shield organization. Though it seems like an uneventful episode its very effective in introducing us to these new characters, As a nice little bonus we also get some great moments with Cobie Smulders reprising her role as Agent Maria Hill, .

The show opens with a new character, Mike Peterson, and his son looking at the new "Heroes of New York" action figures a subtle way to show how the world has changed since The Avengers, unfortunately that subtlety is not carried on. The episode is packed with comic book and movie references that try to make up for excitement that simply is not there. Most of the characters are quite likable so far especially the fan favorite Agent Coulson. Clark Gregg makes a seamless transition from small cameo roles to leader of an entire series. Skye is a little flat but ultimately fulfills her purpose and fits the role well. Less can be said for the science and tech team of Fitz/Simmons who were almost immediately annoying and had me rolling my eyes throughout the episode. There's also some odd pacing issues such as Mike Peterson being introduced, having his background explained, and turning evil all in the first half.

Overall the balance of action, humor, and tech make for a solid Marvel outing that true fans and newcomers alike are sure to enjoy.

The Verdict

Although not perfect Agents of Shield does have alot going for it, This Premiere shows huge potential for a very satisfying season to come.
